Tips and Substitutions

  • While I used Provolone cheese, you can use mozzarella or even a combination of the two. I like them both because they melt well.
  • Don’t skip toasting the garlic bread first. It will stay crisp under the sauce and cheese better.
  • Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese for more flavor.

Serving Ideas

Open faced meatball sandwiches are perfect with a simple side salad, some sauteed vegetables, or alongside a hearty soup such as broccoli cheddar. Something as simple as chips or fries are an easy side on a busy night.

What kind of cheese do you put on meatball sandwiches?

You can use either Provolone or Mozzarella cheese, or a combination of both. They melt well.

Can I store leftover meatballs?

Yes, store the prepared meatballs and sauce for up to 3 days in a covered container in the refrigerator. Do not refreeze meatballs that have been defrosted. Reheat on the stovetop.
