My family loves hot chocolate. We make it whenever the temperatures drop here in Florida, which isn’t very often.

So we savor it!  We have a running joke in our family that we are hot cocoa connoisseurs. While I always have packets of cocoa in the pantry, we love making different varieties from scratch and using packets, including my ultimate hot chocolate, winter white hot chocolate, pumpkin spice hot chocolate, and boozy hot chocolate, like spiked peanut butter hot chocolate.

Why you’ll love hot chocolate with Frangelico

  • It can be made in under 10 minutes.
  • Frangelico hot chocolate is perfect for holiday parties and winter gatherings.
  • Makes a great after-dinner dessert drink.
  • Easy to make with either homemade hot chocolate or packets.
  • Perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and nutty flavors.

Ingredients for Frangelico Hot Chocolate

I have used my ultimate hot chocolate recipe if I make this from scratch but usually I take a shortcut.

  • Hot Chocolate – I use the kind without marshmallows
  • Warm Milk – whole milk will make it richer, but I often use 2%
  • Frangelico

What is Frangelico?

Frangelico is a hazelnut liqueur. Made with natural hazelnut flavor, it’s a product of Italy. There are lots of Frangelico recipes, and you can be sure I will be posting more in the future. The original Nutty Irishman is one of the most popular drinks on the site.

Tips and Suggestions

  • To make this Frangelico hot chocolate, you don’t “have” to make it from scratch. If you do use a packet, make it with milk instead of water. The result will be a rich and creamier beverage.
  • Heat the milk gently to avoid scorching it.
  • Top with homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings to make it extra special.
  • Make it extra chocolaty by stirring in some chocolate chips while heating the milk.

Best Toppings for Hot Chocolate

Marshmallows and whipped cream are the most popular toppings for hot chocolate. But if you want to impress your friends and family and make your photos Instagram-worthy, take your hot chocolate to the next level with these ideas.

  • Chocolate Sauce – drizzle over the whipped cream
  • Caramel Sauce – drizzle over the whipped cream and/ or in addition to the chocolate sauce
  • Toasted Marshmallows – elevates the marshmallow flavor
  • Toasted Nuts – Chopped hazelnuts would be perfect scattered on this Frangelico Hot Chocolate recipe
  • Chocolate Shavings – Use a zester to grate a chocolate bar over the whipped cream
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – Sprinkle over whipped cream
  • Flavored Whipped Cream – Add Frangelico to the heavy cream for a flavored whipped cream
  • Sprinkles – Because they are always fun!

More Winter Cocktails

Whether you’re entertaining or just trying to get cozy by the fire, try crockpot mulled wine, a Mexicocoa, which is also made with hot chocolate, or Irish coffee.
