I wanted to make something cute and fun for one of my 12 Days of Christmas Cookies event this year. I’ve always loved snow globes and thought this TikTok sensation was a cute idea. I put my own twist on them and my whole family went nuts over them.
Why you’ll love this recipe
There are so many reasons to love these festive chocolate dipped Oreos.
- Everyone loves a craft you can eat! Make these snow glow Christmas cookies with the kids then enjoy them as a treat.
- They are an easy cookie that is sure to impress friends and family.
- Sometimes you need easy Christmas cookie recipes in your repertoire.
- Oreo snow globe cookies look harder to make than they are.
- Use any flavor Oreo cookies you like. I used the red holiday, regular white, and mint with the green center.
- Make a couple dozen of these Oreo snow globe cookies to create a winter wonderland for your Christmas party.
- These adorable cookies are sure to bring out your inner child.
What type of cookies do you use to make snow globe cookies?
The best cookie to use is a sandwich cookie, such as Oreo. You can see from the picture I used mint flavored and the red holiday Oreo varieties. They are by far the most festive for the season. Feel free to use any flavor you like. The original variety, white center, is always a good choice.
What ingredients do I need to make Oreo Snow Globe Cookies?
Everything you need for this snow globe cookie recipe is readily available. It was challenging for me to find the edible icing decoration candies because I was looking for them well before the holiday. I did find them on Amazon but places like Hobby Lobby or other craft stores should have them during the season. I used gingerbread men and also an assortment for variety.
- Good Quality White Chocolate Chips – I used Ghirardelli because I find they melt the best. Use a fresh bag.
- Candy Icing Decorations – There is quite a variety available for winter or Christmas. Use what you like just be sure they are the right size for the cookies. You don’t want them to big.
- Sandwich Cookies – As I discussed above, I used Oreos. Other types of cookies are too thin to sit on the tree “base”.
- Mini Reese’s Cups – If you or a recipient has a peanut allergy, you could also use a Rolo.
- White Nonpareils – Sprinkle these nonpareils over the cookie after you place the candy decoration.
Pro Tip
When melting chocolate use a rubber spatula rather than a wooden spoon. Wooden spoons can crack and harbor moisture which can make chocolate seize. Once chocolate has seized you can’t recover. You have to start over.
Tips and Suggestions
Making this recipe was a bit of trial and error. These tips and suggestions are things that worked so you don’t have to recreate the wheel, if you know what I mean.
- I want to start by saying I always prefer melting chocolate on the stovetop, usually in a double boiler but sometimes I will melt it in a saucepan.
- When I melt chocolate, whether it’s white, milk, or dark I always add a teaspoon of solid shortening for every bag I use. So one bag of white chocolate chips gets one teaspoon of shortening. I have a friend who uses vegetable oil but I have never tried it so proceed at your own risk.
- I started by using Ghirardelli melting wafers. They must have been older because they clumped when I melted them in the microwave. I decided this melted candy wasn’t going to work and I needed to move on.
- Next, I tried Ghirardelli white chocolate chips and I have found over and over they garner the best results.
- When dipping the Oreos tap the fork on the side of the ball to let the excess chocolate drip off.
- Have a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, or wax paper, ready before you start dipping the Oreos in white chocolate.
- The easiest way to place cookie on the top of the peanut butter cups is to dip the small side of the Reese’s into melted chocolate and then attach the cookie.
- While you could use white sprinkles instead of nonpareils, I think the nonpareils look more like snow.
- One 11-ounce bag of white chips will make 12 or 13 snow globe cookies.
Can I use candy melts instead of white chocolate?
If you prefer white candy melts use them, it’s perfectly fine. There are a few reasons I don’t like them. Candy melts rarely melt well and ultimately, they just don’t taste good.
How do you store snow globe cookies?
Store them in an airtight container on the counter for 4 or 5 days. You can certainly make then ahead for a party or gift giving.

What is the best type of chocolate to use to dip the Oreos?
When making Oreo snow globe cookies, I like to use Ghirardelli white chocolate chips. Some prefer to use candy melts but I think they taste waxy.
What is the best way to melt white chocolate?
I melt a bag of Ghirardelli white chocolate chips in a double boiler with a teaspoon of shortening added. You need a fresh bag, make sure it’s not expired or it will not melt well. Store brand chips are inconsistent, it’s best to use a good quality.

Oreo Snow Globe Cookies
Equipment
- Baking Sheet
- Double Boiler
- Rubber Spatula
- Fork
- Skewer or Chopsticks
Ingredients
- 1 11 ounce bag Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips
- 1 teaspoon Shortening, such as Crisco
- White Nonpariels
- Candy Icing Decorations
Instructions
- Place some of the nonpareils in a small bowl. Set out 12 Oreo cookies. Open candy icing decorations. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper.
- Melt white chocolate chips and shortening according to your preferred method. I suggest on the stovetop in a double boiler. Stir until all the white chocolate is melted and the consistency is smooth.1 11 ounce bag Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips, 1 teaspoon Shortening, such as Crisco
- Working with one cookie at a time, place one Oreo cookie in the melted white chocolate. Using a fork, flip the cookie over to coat it in the white chocolate. Make sure the cookie is covered. Lift the cookie out of the white chocolate and gently tap the fork on the side of the pan to allow the excess to drip off. Using a skewer or chopstick gently slide the cookie off the fork onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place one of the icing decorations in the center of the cookie. Sprinkle a few white nonpareils over the cookie to look like snow. Repeat with the remaining cookies working with one or two at a time.Candy Icing Decorations, White Nonpariels
- Allow white chocolate to set. Once all the cookie globes are set, you can begin putting the cookies on the bases (mini Reese's). If the white chocolate has begun to harden, melt it again. Dip the small side of the mini Reese's cup into the white chocolate and set it chocolate side up on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Gently place a cookie on top of the Reese's, and hold briefly so it will stay. The cookie will be verticle, standing on its side on the Reese's. See photos for reference. Allow to set before serving or storing.
