Tips and Suggestions

Since I’ve made these cookies a couple of times, I’ve found the best way to combine the 3 dough colors is to pinch a bit of each color and stuff it into a cookie scoop until it’s full. I use a teaspoon scoop.

The bottom of the cookies should be golden brown but not overcooked. The top should be dry and set.

Dress up these fun cookies with a white chocolate drizzle and patriotic sprinkles over the tops of the cookies. Melt white chocolate chips with a bit of shortening, drizzle over the cooled cookies, and top with sprinkles.

The easiest way to do this is to keep the cooled cookies on the wire rack and place it over a baking sheet lined with parchment so there’s easy clean-up after you decorate the cookies.

Serve these red, white, and blue swirl cookies at a July 4th party to welcome home family and friends from the military, on Memorial Day, at a backyard party, at summer potlucks, at a fireworks party, when someone becomes a United States citizen, and on any other occasion that calls for something patriotic.

Serve them on a dessert tray with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and yogurt-covered pretzels for a truly patriotic presentation.

Store these soft cookies in a single layer in an airtight container at room temperature.

What can I serve with Patriotic Cookies?

Milk is an obvious choice but a delicious coffee drink like caramel coffee or Irish coffee would be ideal too. If it’s too hot for coffee, try my frozen hot chocolate.

These red white and blue cookies are also delicious served with vanilla ice cream. Use them as a cute garnish.

Do cake mix cookies stay soft?

Yes, these red white and blue cookies will stay soft for 2 to 3 days.

What food coloring works best to color cookie dough?

Gel food coloring, such as Americolor, works the best. I’ve used it for years with great results.
