I have been a fan of sandwiches, especially for dinner, for many years now. This classic Southern egg salad is a favorite for a weekday lunch, and it travels well to work too. My son and I will usually order a club sandwich if it’s on a menu, so making this roast beef club sandwich was a good idea for us. He was happily surprised when I served it to him for lunch.

Quick Recipe Facts

BEST FOR: Easy lunches, casual dinners, and picnics
PREP LEVEL: Quick and easy
MAKE AHEAD: Prep ahead, but assemble just before serving.
CUSTOMIZABLE: Swap out the meats, cheeses, or bread.

What is a club sandwich?

The club sandwich has evolved over the years. When it was first “invented” back in 1894 at a gambling place in Saratoga Springs, NY, the word CLUB told you what was in the sandwich, much like a BLT. CLUB stood for chicken lettuce under bacon. But today, it can be any combination of meats and cheeses.

You may wonder why there are 3 pieces of bread on a club sandwich. The presumption, because no one really knows for sure, is that the sandwich was so meat heavy that an extra slice of bread evened out the meat-to-bread ratio.

Ingredients

Use either deli meat or leftovers for this roast beef, ham, and bacon club sandwich. I use both, depending on what I have on hand.

  • Roast Beef
  • Ham
  • Bacon
  • Cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Mayonnaise
  • Wheat Bread

For a beverage, try a classic diner strawberry milkshake, strawberry iced tea, or blueberry lemonade.

Tips and Suggestions

  • You can certainly use more than one type of cheese. Mayonnaise or mustard are some favorite condiment choices, but my son likes horseradish with roast beef.
  • I like a light toast on the bread. If you’re packing this sandwich in a lunch box, I suggest putting the lettuce or cheese next to the bread so the deli meats don’t make the bread soggy.
  • For best results, assemble the sandwich just before serving. If you do want to pack it for lunch, put the lettuce or cheese next to the bread so the meat doesn’t make the bread soggy.

How do you customize a club sandwich?

What I love about club sandwiches is the versatility. You can use any deli meats you like, turkey, ham, roast beef, salami, and any cheese you fancy. Or use up leftover slices from ham, turkey, or roast that are hanging out in your fridge. Our cheese choices are usually provolone or swiss.

You may notice something obvious missing from this sandwich. Tomato. There’s no tomato. I don’t like tomatoes. My son’s sandwich had tomato but just a slice. Add them if you like them.

So see what I mean by the customizing of your sandwich. Even better, you can make a different version for each member of your family. Or they can make their own. Use your favorite bread. I like wheat or Italian but sourdough or a lovely artisan loaf would work.

What is the difference between a club sandwich and a regular sandwich?

There are a few big differences, including a club sandwich has three slices of toasted bread. A true club sandwich has layers of specific ingredients and is often cut into triangles, though not always.

What cheese is best for a roast beef club sandwich?

Mozzarella and Provolone are the best choices, but if you prefer something else, such as Swiss or American, feel free to use it.
