Apple pie spice is one of those spices you like having in your pantry but why buy yet another spice? You probably have everything on your spice shelf. Homemade apple pie spice is made up of some spices you may not use all that often. Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and allspice combine to form the mixture. Many add cardamom, however that is not a spice my family really likes.
Making your own spice mixture is a budget friendly way to have it in your pantry and it saves on time and clean up. Once you get homemade apple pie spice made, you now only use one measuring spoon in one spice.
Depending on your tastes, you can add just a pinch or a bit more to any apple recipe. If a recipe calls for all those other spices, feel free to substitute a smaller amount that what those add up to. For example, if those spices add up to 2 tablespoons, then use a bit less otherwise it may be too overpowering.
Check out my post to make pumpkin pie spice too and get some ideas on how else to use it. Use the homemade apple pie spice in pancake or waffle batters or mix it into the topping for a crumble.
