My family loves beef. So when I went through my recipe box looking for inspiration I came across these easy French dip sandwiches that I have not made in a very long time. It’s one of our favorite sandwiches.

  • Sliced Roast Beef – I get it in the deli section of my grocery store.
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Can of French Onion Soup
  • Water
  • Provolone Cheese
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  • Hoagie Buns or Sub Rolls

What kind of cheese do you use in a French dip recipe?

The best cheeses for French dip sandwiches are melty cheeses such as Mozzarella cheese, Provolone cheese, or Swiss Cheese. I have been known to use a combination of Mozzarella and Provolone.

I like to line the hoagie roll with slices of Provolone, to help keep the bun from getting soggy, and then add shredded Mozzarella cheese over the top.

When I found this recipe in my recipe box, I doctored it up just a bit with the addition of Worcestershire sauce. Something my husband is not a big fan of but doesn’t notice in this recipe. It’s the umami flavor that makes this a delicious au jus.

I find the Worcestershire sauce adds a great flavor to the canned French onion soup. I’m not usually a fan of using canned soups but I do so for quick convenience. They can be a great beginning for sauces in some recipes.

Additions and Tips

You can make these French dip sandwiches with au jus your own with a few simple additions.

  • If you have time and want to take this sandwich up a notch, add caramelized onions.
  • Add a teaspoon of soy sauce to the soup for some added flavor in the warm au jus. Not too much because it’s salty.
  • Add a cube or teaspoon of beef bouillion to the soup mixture for an extra beefy flavor.
  • When you put the sandwiches in the oven, keep the au jus warm on the stove top over low to medium heat.

While this French dip sandwich recipe is super easy, you may just want dinner done after a long day at work. Try this crock pot version made with a chuck roast. Serve them on either a French roll or hoagie rolls.

Homemade french fries would be a classic side and what you might get with a delicious French dip sandwich in a restaurant.

Plantain chips and sweet potato chips are nice options instead of plain potato chips.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans 10-1/2 ounces condensed French onion soup, undiluted
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 2 pounds of not too thinly sliced deli roast beef
  • 8 slices provolone cheese Or 2 cups shredded Mozzarella
  • 4 hoagie rolls split but not cut through

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300°F. In a large saucepan over medium heat combine the soup, Worcestershire sauce, and water. Stir gently. Add roast beef slices. Heat thoroughly and until soup being to bubble.
  • Once the roast beef is warm, evenly divide it among the 4 hoagie rolls. Top with 2 slices of Provolone or about 1/2 cup of shredded Mozzarella.
  • Place each sandwich on a rimmed baking sheet. Heat sandwiches in the oven until cheese is melted, about 6 – 9 minutes. Ladle onion soup into small ramekins and serve for dipping.
