While looking through my Mom’s recipe box, I came across this recipe for orange sauce. The recipe card said orange sauce for ham.

Since my kids were home from college, we got a Honey-Baked Ham, and I made this recipe. We are all fans of anything orange and loved it after the first taste.

Since trying the homemade orange sauce recipe with the ham, I’ve also used it with grilled chicken. My husband thinks it would be a great addition to a duck recipe.

Ingredients

With just four readily available ingredients, this orange sauce comes together quickly. Make it while your main dish rests after cooking. I’ll admit, these ingredients are somewhat of an unconventional pairing. Don’t be turned off by the mustard, and don’t leave it out!

  • Orange Juice – Fresh is OK to use.
  • Sweet Orange Marmalade
  • Cornstarch – for thickening.
  • Spicy Brown Mustard – I used Gulden’s.

Tips and Substitutions

  • Dijon mustard would be a good substitution for the spicy brown mustard. Don’t use yellow or a coarse-grain mustard. Yellow has too much tang and the coarse mustard will ruin the texture.
  • Want to add a little heat? Add a teaspoon of red pepper flakes or more or less to taste.
  • I put the orange sauce in a gravy boat and placed it on the table for guest to pour or spoon onto their plate. No gravy boat? Place the sauce in a bowl and use a gravy ladle to spoon it.

How do you use orange sauce?

Orange sauce is very versatile. It can be used as a condiment for baked ham, spooned over grilled or fried chicken, duck, pork, or a firm fish like grouper. It can be used as a dip for egg rolls or spring rolls. You could also use it as a glaze for orange chicken.

How do you store orange sauce?

Store the orange sauce in a covered jar or airtight container, I like a glass container, in the refrigerator for up to 4 or 5 days.
