If there was a manly version of a Bloody Mary, the Michelada would be it. Made with beer and tomato juice, there’s a bit of heat to keep it interesting. A Mexican Michelada is perfect, not only for Cinco de Mayo but for brunch or game day parties.

What is a Michelada?

It is a Mexican drink made with beer, lime juice, assorted sauces, spices, tomato juice (or Clamato), and chili peppers. It is served in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass. There are numerous variations of this beverage throughout Mexico.

A Michelada could be considered a close cousin to the red-eye. A red-eye doesn’t have the Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce and the heat is a personal preference.

A red-eye, also called a red beer or tomato beer, is often used as a hangover remedy.

How to Make A Mexican Michelada

Made with beer, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and tomato juice it’s sometimes called a Mexican Bloody Mary.

Typically the best beer to use is a Mexican beer, my favorite being Modelo but other choices could include Sol, Corona, or Tecante. If you prefer the light version, go with it.

To fancy up the cocktail, I’ve mixed cayenne pepper and salt together to rim the glass. If you have Tajin seasoning, use that to rim your glass for something different.

Sometimes, instead of tomato juice, I’ve used Clamato or clam juice, which brings another level of flavor to the drink.

When I think of brunch cocktails I think of mimosas and Bloody Marys typically drinks popular with women. When I host brunch I like to set up a beverage bar so guests can help themselves.

But I wanted an easy drink that my male friends would like and beer and tomato juice with spices sounded like it was a good idea. The Mexican Michelada cocktail is a perfect choice.

For this Mexican Michelada cocktail, I’d offer a variety of Mexican beers, along with bottles of Worchestershire sauce and soy sauce and a bowl of lime wedges. I would have glasses prepped with the cayenne so guests are ready to go.

Mix up your brunch cocktails and serve a spicy Michelada. Serve it alongside mimosas and Bloody Mary's on the beverage bar. Click to Tweet
