The recipe starts with store bought dough. Easy, peasy, right?! You can find it in the freezer section. Just thaw and start rolling the balls. Kids will have fun helping with this task. Let rise a bit and bake slightly before adding the actual dip part.

You need some time to prepare this appetizer so plan accordingly. You can certainly plan ahead. Mix up the cream cheese mixture and keep it in the refrigerator until you need to bake it for your guests.

As you can imagine, it’s steaming hot when it comes out of the oven. After all, it is in a cast iron pan. Let it cool 10 to 15 minutes and then enjoy! You have to love a dip that has built in dippers!

Game Day Appetizers

We enjoy NASCAR and this is one of our family favorite NASCAR party food ideas. I usually make it for the Daytona 500 and the final race of the season. A friend calls this her baseball appetizer because she makes it throughout the baseball playoffs and World Series.

This recipe is full of cheesy goodness and is really perfect party or game day food. Other easy appetizers on the blog include baked artichoke squares, maple pecan apple brie bites, and sweet and smokey juicy Lucy BBQ sliders.

What if I don’t have a cast iron pan?

I love using my cast iron pans but if you don’t have one you can certainly make this recipe in another skillet. You just need to make sure it’s oven safe. That means the you can put the skillet in the oven without worrying if any part of it will melt.

An oven safe skillet has all metal parts, including the entire handle. Some people will say to just wrap a rubberized handle on aluminum foil and put it in the oven but I never trust that method so I don’t suggest it. Check the recipe card below for a cast iron pan if you’re interested in adding one to your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder divided
  • 16 ounces frozen bread dough dinner rolls thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded and divided
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1/4 cup sliced pepperoni
  • 1/2 medium onion diced
  • 2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • In a saucepan, melt butter and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder. Cut each roll into thirds; roll each piece into a ball. Dip dough balls in butter mixture; place along outer edge of a 10-inch cast-iron skillet. Carefully place remaining dough balls on top of bottom layer, leaving some space between them and not placing in the center. Cover and rise in a warm place until almost doubled, about 30 minutes. (Time will vary depending on how warm your kitchen is.)
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Bake until dough balls are set and just begin to brown, 15-18 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine cream cheese, 1 cup mozzarella, mayonnaise, diced onion, and the remaining garlic powder; spoon into center of skillet. Layer with 1/4 cup mozzarella and pizza sauce. Top with remaining mozzarella and pepperoni. Brush rolls with some of remaining butter mixture; sprinkle with Parmesan.
  • Bake until dip is heated and the rolls are golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Cover edges with foil if they begin to over-brown.
