Pin Fried Onion Strings to make later.

Fried onion strings just like you find in restaurants.

My kids LOVE fried onion strings. If they are on a menu when we are dining out, they will order them every single time. The last time I made one of our favorite sandwiches, which I will be sharing soon, I whipped up these onion strings. My kids went crazy for them and I’ve made then a number of times since then. They go well with hotdogs and hamburgers too.

Onion strings cooking away in a Dutch oven.

A few years ago while traveling through Georgia, we stopped at the Lodge outlet in Commerce. I purchased a Dutch oven, in my favorite color purple, on sale. A price you would never believe! Whenever we are in the area, we always stop and on a subsequent visit I purchased a fry basket for said Dutch oven. These fried onion strings are the first thing I’ve made using the basket. It worked like a charm. Sure you can make these in a fry daddy or other fryer but I didn’t need one more appliance.

To make these, you need your onions to be very thinly sliced and evenly thin. Unless you have stellar knife skills, which I do not possess, or are a professional chef, which I am not, I suggest using a mandolin. Try a couple or settings to get the thinness that you want. If you choose to use a mandolin, please, please, PLEASE use the guard. I speak from experience, being one who thought I was too good to use it. That was until I sliced my finger.

If your family likes fried onion strings as much as mine, surprise them! In addition to hotdogs and hamburgers, serve these fried onion straws with French dip sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches and this over the top grilled cheese sandwich.

  • Slice onion very thinly. I use a mandolin for this task.
  • Place in a baking dish and cover with buttermilk and soak for 1/2 an hour.
  • Combine dry ingredients and set aside.
  • Heat oil to 375 degrees. Use a candy/ oil thermometer for accuracy.

  • Repeat until you have fried all the onions.

  1. Hi Ellen! My fryer is standing by for these onion strings! We adore onion strings at my house. I can’t help but try to put them on everything from burgers to chicken sandwiches! I made these a feature at Whimsical Wednesdays Link Party this week. Thanks SO much for sharing!

  2. Ouch, just reading about your cutting your finger made me cringe. I think I’ll stick to cutting onions by hand. I haven’t made onion strings in a long time since my oldest didn’t like onions, but now that he moved out, I can make tons of onions strings 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

  3. I love those right on top of a burger or pulled pork sandwich (inside, under the bun). So delicious and indulgent. Definitely a treat! Thanks for hosting this month. It’s a great theme.
